The Bulldogs will face the Surrey Eagles in the first round of the Coastal Conference playoffs. It’s the third straight year the teams have met in the post season, with the Bulldogs winning in seven games in the second round in 2023, and the Eagles winning in seven games in the Conference finals last season.
New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury announced Tuesday that the team has agreed to terms with goaltender Callum Tung on a three-year, entry-level contract. Tung will report to the Hartford Wolf Pack on an amateur tryout (ATO) for the remainder of this season.
Tung, 21, posted a 10-4-1 record, 2.01 goals-against average, and .933 save percentage in 15 games with the UConn Huskies (Hockey East) this season, leading them to their first-ever NCAA Tournament. Tung finished his lone season at UConn with the sixth-best save percentage among collegiate goaltenders, 12th best goals-against average, and tied for the 13th best win percentage (.700). His save percentage ranked second among Hockey East goaltenders and his goals-against average ranked third. In addition, Tung allowed two or fewer goals in 11 of his 15 appearances this season.
The Port Moody, British Columbia native played parts of two seasons with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the BCHL prior to playing collegiately. For the Bulldogs, the 6-3, 198-pound netminder appeared in 43 games and finished with a 24-15-2 regular season record, 2.87 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage. In the postseason, he contributed a 11-7-1 mark with a 2.16 goals-against average and a .939 save percentage.
Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Tung was the Most Valuable Player with the Port Alberni Bombers in 2021-2022, where he posted a .951 save percentage in seven playoff games.
The inaugural Mec Mountain Mens hockey tournament goes this weekend at the Multiplex. There will be 12 teams from the Valley and the Island competing from Friday night through Sunday’s championship games. It will be a family friendly event – there will be raffle tables and silent auction items and 50/50 draws.
Games run Friday evening, all day Saturday with the finals scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
The concession will be open for food and beverages.
The Bombers had their season come to an end with a 5-3 loss at home Thursday night in the VIJHL’s North Final to the Campbell River Storm. Jack Barrett, Zach Spafford and Grayson Salmon scored. The game was tied at 3-3 after 40 minutes, with the Storm scoring the winner eight minutes into the third.
Campbell River moves on to face the Peninsula Panthers in the VIJHL final.
