Bulldogs drop two , Bombers historic season ends, ADSS Basketball, Wrestling updates

The Bulldogs dropped back to back games to the Victoria Grizzlies over the weekend. They lost 7-2 at home Friday night – Jacob Terpstra and Connor Frost scored. They fell 3-2 on Saturday night down in Victoria. Wyatt Blace and McCarthy Richardson scored.

The Bulldogs have two games left in their regular season this weekend, as they host the Surrey Eagles Friday, and visit the Cowichan Valley Capitals on Saturday night.

The Bombers had their season come to an end with a 5-3 loss at home Thursday night in the VIJHL’s North Final to the Campbell River Storm. Jack Barrett, Zach Spafford and Grayson Salmon scored. The game was tied at 3-3 after 40 minutes, with the Storm scoring the winner eight minutes into the third.

Campbell River moves on to face the Peninsula Panthers in the VIJHL final.

Alberni Wrestling Team Competes in Centralia Washington Tournaments

Centralia Washington, March 22 – Our wrestling team had an exciting weekend, competing in two separate tournaments held in Centralia Washington. The events took place on Saturday, March 22, & Sunday March 23 and showcased the team’s talent, determination, and adaptability.

On the first day, our wrestlers faced tough competition in freestyle matches. Nolan Cross placed in the top six while Jackson Price had 2 wins and Rain Olsen picked up a win. Other wrestlers who competed were Kane Olsen, Evan Jimenez and Gavin Fong. The team demonstrated great skill and tenacity throughout their bouts.

The second day brought a new challenge as the team competed in American folk style wrestling, which features a different set of rules. Despite the need to adjust their strategies and tactics, our wrestlers embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, resulting in a mix of wins and losses. This marked the first time our wrestlers experienced folk style wrestling, and they handled it admirably.

The primary goal of these tournaments was to gain experience by competing against new opponents. Over the two-day event, our wrestlers traveled, competed, and learned valuable lessons that will be brought back to the practice room to further develop their skills.

Coach Travis Cross commended the wrestlers on their ability to adapt to the challenges of traveling and competing in such tournaments. The team will continue their rigorous training with other Island teams as they prepare to send a small group to Calgary in April for the Canadian national championships.

Congrats to the Tseshaht Lightning U13 Girls team, who won the bronze medal at the Junior All Native Basketball tournament, with a 35-17 win over the Skeena Sisters.
