More bad news for the Alberni Valley economy with the cancellation of this year’s sockeye salmon fishery.
According to the West Coast Vancouver Island Salmon Bulletin, fewer than 200,000 sockeye are expected to return to the Stamp – Somass system, so there will be no fishing this year.
The run is listed as ‘critical’ after a poor 2015 brood year, high sea surface temperatures, and low ocean survival rates.
The commercially caught net species has been an important part of local First Nations and marine sector economies.
The sockeye run has recently been as high as two million fish in 2015, and as low as 185,000 last year.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada will do a run reforecast on June 25th
